The return of NARAL’s The Morning After!

We’re back! After a summer hiatus, we’re thrilled to return to NARAL’s The Morning After, a weekly podcast to discuss sexual politics in Ohio and across the country.

This week, Randi, Jaime, and Gabe discuss Donald Trump and his hate-filled rant that followed a trip to Mexico. His anti-immigrant rage reached epic proportions last night. We’re reminded that his candidacy is endorsed by US Senator Rob Portman and Ohio Right to Life.

During our summer break, three major events occured:

  1. Toledo’s only remaining abortion clinic won a victory in court that will keep their doors open.
  2. Planned Parenthood won a victory in court to block John Kasich’s effort to strip them of critical state funds.
  3. A new study in PLOS Medicine showed that Ohio abortion restrictions actually harmed women from 2011 to 2016.

Ohio Right to Life President Mike Gonidakis received this week’s Walk of Shame for his criticism of Judge Michael R. Barrett of the U.S. District Court in Cincinnati. Gonidakis told the Columbus Dispatch:

The federal judge has no legal authority to tell a state how to spend its resources. I suggest he do us all a favor and step down from the bench and run for the legislature. Then he can legally craft policy in Ohio. Of course he won’t, though, because he would never be elected.

This criticism drew a quick response from Ohio groups calling for his resignation as president of the State Medical Board.

Our That’s What She Said of the week goes to Toledo Blade columnist Marilou Johanek. Her op-ed called for Gonidakis to resign from the board.

The jig is up. Mr. Gonidakis, it is painfully clear that you can’t pursue an anti-abortion crusade and be a neutral public arbitrator of disputes involving licensed abortion providers. You told an audience in northeast Ohio on May 27, 2011, that “We’re going after Planned Parenthood” and “We’re gonna close that late-term abortion clinic down in Dayton.”

You sent personal asides, attached to your RTL emails on the Dayton clinic that said, “Sandy [Theis, Executive Director of ProgressOhio] … will you finally repudiate the industry for which you so proudly support? So much for ‘women’s health.’ So sad.”

So prejudicial. And so unacceptable for a state medical board president. Mr. Gonidakis has got to go.

You can email Gov. John Kasich and demand he remove Gonidakis from the State Medical Board.

Send Your Email Now.

This week, Randi and Gabe went to Cleveland to join Annie. Annie Kroll is our resident goofball / puppeteer / field organizer. She dressed up for International Women’s Day.

We discussed recent vandalism at the Planed Parenthood abortion clinic in Columbus. Red paint was found scrawled across the building reading “SATAN DEN OF BABYKILLERS GOD SEE ALLLL (sic) Mark 9:14”.

That same day, some awesome volunteers quickly repainted the building.

The vandalism reinforces the need to pass legislation bringing stronger protections to abortion clinic staff and patients. House Bill 408 is sitting in the Ohio House Committee on Judiciary.

Podcast: SCOTUS Update and URGE Event

Find us on iTunes: http://bit.ly/naralpodcast

This week, John Kasich is trying to decide when in the presidential election calendar to sign the bill to defund Planned Parenthood.

Jaime joined students from URGE in condemning the defunding; and she called for additional hearings for House Bill 408, to create an abortion clinic buffer zone. Stay tuned after the show to hear the remarks from their media event.

Finally, we look to the US Supreme Court. With the sudden passing of Justice Antonin Scalia, the possibility of a new SCOTUS nominee has taken over the presidential campaign and political discussions everywhere. Meanwhile, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio is joining with the Center for Reproductive Rights to send a bus to Washington DC for oral arguments on Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellersteadt (formerly Cole) on March 2. Register here.

Ohio House debate on Planned Parenthood

Find us on iTunes: http://bit.ly/naralpodcast

This week, the Ohio House held the final vote on defunding Planned Parenthood, approving Senate changes to the bill 58-32. With that vote, the bill goes to John Kasich’s desk for a signature.

The vote was delayed from January 27 because of a last-minute Senate amendment and because the House decided to adjourn on that day. The result was the final vote wouldn’t happen until February 10, one day after the New Hampshire primary. Kasich will sign the bill as he begins his campaign to win over more conservative South Carolina voters.

Today’s podcast brings you audio from the House debate, with Democratic women leading the defense of Planned Parenthood: Reps. Kathleen Clyde, Emilia Sykes, Greta Johnson, and Janine Boyd.

This week, Jaime, Randi, and Gabe discussed tonight’s Democratic debate. Only Secretary Clinton and Senator Sanders are remaining in that race. We look back at Iowa and forward to next week’s New Hampshire primary.

Also next week, an Ohio House committee will hear testimony on new abortion clinic buffer legislation. The full House will cast a final vote on defunding Planned Parenthood, which John Kasich has pledged to sign before the South Carolina primary.

Banning HIV tests on World AIDS Day

WorldAIDS3_20151201

World AIDS Day is recognized every December 1. In Ohio, however, citizens most at risk of contracting HIV are facing political opposition to their health care.

NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland:

Nearly 1,000 Ohioans test positive for HIV every year. Almost half of them are African Americans. Ohio politicians are about to make it harder for them to access HIV tests. Why?

Ohio Right to Life claims all the time that Planned Parenthood health centers are in many minority communities. There’s a reason that’s often true: these communities need accessible and affordable health care. HIV testing is critical for men and women to discover their status and seek early treatment. It’s also a part of a complete health care presence that educates teens and adults about how to avoid Sexually Transmitted Infections.

John Kasich wants to block Ohioans from being able to turn to Planned Parenthood to access HIV testing so he can score political points with conservative voters in Iowa and New Hampshire.

House Bill 294 and Senate Bill 214 specifically stop health care providers from using funds through the “Minority HIV Initiative” if those providers perform abortions or promote or contract with any abortion provider. The bill also stops health care providers and educators from using the funds for the “Personal Responsibility Education Program” if those providers perform abortions or either the educators or providers promote or contract with any abortion provider.

Email your elected officials and demand they oppose efforts to divert funds away from the educators and health care providers who can best assist our friends and neighbors.
