My thoughts and prayers go to the families of Officer Garrett Swasey, Ke’Arre Stewart, and Jennifer Markovsky. I’m also thinking of the wounded Planned Parenthood patients and police officers, with hopes for speedy recoveries.
Let’s not beat around the bush. You and I both know that the inflammatory rhetoric of anti-choice organizations and politicians have for decades helped create an environment where extremists are motivated to commit acts of violence against abortion providers.
Today, I call for an end to this careless and dangerous language and I’m asking you to join me.
Sadly, we have to look no further than the political leaders in Ohio to see some of the worst examples of this rhetoric.
- On November 13, the Columbus Dispatch quoted John Kasich as telling New Hampshire voters that Planned Parenthood is “selling body parts.”
- On November 4, Ohio Capital Blog recorded Speaker Cliff Rosenberger repeating lies about “horrific” acts and taxpayer funding.
- On October 21, Ohio Capital Blog recorded Ohio Senate President Keith Faber claiming that Planned Parenthood “chops up babies.” He also said these things during a rally on July 28 and to a Senate committee on October 14.
It is possible to articulate opposition to something without using language that incites violence. These elected officials have failed that test of leadership.
I’ve also heard this language used by Created Equal, Ohio Right to Life, and Faith2Action. These organizations regularly make irresponsible statements, with seemingly little regard for those who may be harmed.
Send an email to John Kasich and your state legislators. Demand they act like responsible adults. Not everyone will respect a woman’s right to safe and legal abortion, but they can be respectful to those of us who do.
NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio
Help build a pro-choice Ohio. Every day, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio fights to protect access to the full range of reproductive health care options—including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and safe & legal abortion care. We educate the public about the real threat to women’s healthcare posed by anti-choice legislation and policies. We mobilize pro-choice Ohioans to take political action to defend reproductive rights. And we are the voice for Ohio’s abortion clinics, helping them navigate the increasingly hostile climate created by extremist groups. But we need your help. As a member organization, we rely on your financial support to fund our important legislative, educational, and grassroots activities.
