SCOTUS Rally for Whole Woman’s Health

This week, Randi, Jaime, and Gabe talk about the rally during oral arguments for Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt. The case is a challenge to Texas abortion restrictions because they place an undue burden on abortion providers. If WWH wins, the case could create legal precedent to challenge similar rules in Ohio.

Speaking at the rally was Ohio state Rep. Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo). Rep. Fedor revealed her rape and abortion during floor debate in the six-week abortion ban bill (AKA the “Heartbeat” bill). She was one of four elected officials to sign an amicus brief supporting Whole Woman’s Health. She spoke at the rally backed by huge O-H-I-O signs from NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio.

Rep. Fedor spoke with NPR: “I was a single mom at the time, going to college, just out of the Air Force and was planning my life. And then going down that path, you run into an issue where you were violated, raped, and you found out you were pregnant. That is a devastating blow on the road that you’re traveling.”

In an interview with the Cleveland Plain Dealer, she said: “I came here to share my story about the difficult time in my life and how grateful I was to have that freedom. And I want to fight to keep that freedom for all women.”

Many other groups attended the rally, from Ohio and across America. Our friends at New Voices for Reproductive Justice traveled with NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio on a busload of volunteers through the night. La’Tasha Mayes delivered a fierce oratory: “We’re gonna keep talking. We’re gonna keep fighting. We’re gonna keep organizing. We’re gonna keep resisting. We will be unapologetically Black as we build a movement for reproductive justice across this nation. Our bodies will not be a political battlefield. Our lives will be valued. We are the #BlackGirlMagic of this movement.”

Ohio’s rape statute of limitations extended 5 years

Good news: a bill to lift the statute of limitations for rape prosecution is heading to Gov. Kasich’s desk. It gives survivors years additional five years to press charges, for prosecutors to act, and for Ohio’s rape kit testing backlog to catch up. He’ll certainly sign the Republican-sponsored legislation.

“Why isn’t this GREAT news?” you ask.

The answer is simple: Why only 5 years?

This bill, HB 6, moves the bar from 20 to 25 years. However, Rep. Greta Johnson (D-Akron) and Rep. Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo) know a statute of limitations on rape should not exist at all. Their HB 234 would completely remove the statute of limitations and redefine spousal rape.

The Republican leadership loves to talk tough against crime, but they’re slow to protect rape victims — Shock! Whether or not they’ll see the logic behind dropping a statute of limitations is yet to be seen.
