The return of NARAL’s The Morning After!

We’re back! After a summer hiatus, we’re thrilled to return to NARAL’s The Morning After, a weekly podcast to discuss sexual politics in Ohio and across the country.

This week, Randi, Jaime, and Gabe discuss Donald Trump and his hate-filled rant that followed a trip to Mexico. His anti-immigrant rage reached epic proportions last night. We’re reminded that his candidacy is endorsed by US Senator Rob Portman and Ohio Right to Life.

During our summer break, three major events occured:

  1. Toledo’s only remaining abortion clinic won a victory in court that will keep their doors open.
  2. Planned Parenthood won a victory in court to block John Kasich’s effort to strip them of critical state funds.
  3. A new study in PLOS Medicine showed that Ohio abortion restrictions actually harmed women from 2011 to 2016.

Ohio Right to Life President Mike Gonidakis received this week’s Walk of Shame for his criticism of Judge Michael R. Barrett of the U.S. District Court in Cincinnati. Gonidakis told the Columbus Dispatch:

The federal judge has no legal authority to tell a state how to spend its resources. I suggest he do us all a favor and step down from the bench and run for the legislature. Then he can legally craft policy in Ohio. Of course he won’t, though, because he would never be elected.

This criticism drew a quick response from Ohio groups calling for his resignation as president of the State Medical Board.

Our That’s What She Said of the week goes to Toledo Blade columnist Marilou Johanek. Her op-ed called for Gonidakis to resign from the board.

The jig is up. Mr. Gonidakis, it is painfully clear that you can’t pursue an anti-abortion crusade and be a neutral public arbitrator of disputes involving licensed abortion providers. You told an audience in northeast Ohio on May 27, 2011, that “We’re going after Planned Parenthood” and “We’re gonna close that late-term abortion clinic down in Dayton.”

You sent personal asides, attached to your RTL emails on the Dayton clinic that said, “Sandy [Theis, Executive Director of ProgressOhio] … will you finally repudiate the industry for which you so proudly support? So much for ‘women’s health.’ So sad.”

So prejudicial. And so unacceptable for a state medical board president. Mr. Gonidakis has got to go.

You can email Gov. John Kasich and demand he remove Gonidakis from the State Medical Board.

Get Gonidakis off the State Medical Board of Ohio

Anyone who is professionally committed to overturning a safe, constitutionally protected medical procedure does not belong on the State Medical Board. Mike Gonidakis must resign from the board.

Despite being the president of Ohio Right to Life, Mr. Gonidakis was appointed to one of two “consumer” seats on the Medical Board. Mr. Gonidakis has demonstrated that he does not represent all – or even a majority – of Ohio consumers. Instead, he primarily represents the narrow interests of Ohio Right to Life, which is dedicated to “helping to eliminate such immoral practices as abortion.” History shows that a ban on legal abortions will lead to an increase in illegal abortions and have a profound and devastating effect on women’s health.

Groups representing doctors, consumers and women asked the Ohio State Medical Board to force the resignation of Mr. Gonidakis. They made the decision to speak out following comments from Mr. Gonidakis criticizing U.S. District Court Judge Michael R. Barrett, who blocked the defunding of Planned Parenthood. It is inappropriate and unseemly in the extreme for a member of the State Medical Board to castigate a federal judge in such personal terms, let alone publicly call for his resignation from the bench.

Email Gov. Kasich and demand Mr. Gonidakis resign.

His views are at odds with those of the American Medical Association, American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the constitutional rights of all Americans. Clearly, a State Medical Board member’s personal views on abortion should have no bearing on potential disciplinary actions against Ohio abortion providers.

Join us in demanding his resignation immediately.

NARAL’s The Morning After — August 27, 2015

NARAL’s The Morning After is on iTunes! Find our Podcast here: http://bit.ly/naralpodcast

This week, Jaime, Randi, and Gabe discuss Ohio’s Down Syndrome abortion ban bill, including coverage in the New York Times, LA Times, FoxNews, and CNN. Our Kellie Copeland gets the That’s What She Said award of the week for calling Ohio Gov. John Kasich a phony.

We’ll discuss Ohio Right to Life‘s support for Sen. Marco Rubio. They hosted the Republican presidential candidate after he made extreme remarks on abortion without exception. Kasich says he supports rape, incest , and life of the mother exceptions; but none of the bills he’s signed have them.

The Walk of Shame award goes to jerks near the campus of The Ohio State University who hung rapey banners on move-in day.

Finally, we invite you to join us in Toledo for Pride as Randi lists our upcoming activities in the Let’s Get It On segment.

Recent Pro-Choice Letters

This weekend saw some great letters printed in Ohio newspapers defending women’s health care. Are you interested in speaking up for reproductive rights? Contact us for tips, and check out the letters below. We’ve included an excerpt of each, click the headlines for more.

Right to Life leader distorted clinic details
Columbus Dispatch, 8/16/15

Since preventing unintended pregnancies would mean far fewer abortions, one might think that anti-abortion crusaders such as Gonidakis would be among birth control’s biggest cheerleaders. One would be wrong.

Dale Butland, Columbus

Women’s well-being is sacrificed for agenda

Columbus Dispatch, 8/15/15

Gov. John Kasich has enacted 16 anti-women’s health measures, stripping more than $1 million in federal family-planning programs from Planned Parenthood. The people of Ohio cannot afford to be put at risk while our state and federal legislators advance their personal political agendas at the expense of the public’s health and welfare.

Jennifer McNally, Bexley
Trustee, Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio

Women do not have abortions for profit

Columbus Dispatch, 8/17/15

Is one ready to tell a parent whose child could benefit from medical research, “Sorry, your child will have to die because we passed a law that tissue from abortions must be thrown away”?

Ann, Athens

Defending Planned Parenthood

Akron Beacon Journal, 8/15/15

A Planned Parenthood checkup revealed cancerous cells on my cervix. Cryosurgery, performed by a physician with whom the Planned Parenthood clinic had a partnership, ensured that these cells were removed. Without Planned Parenthood, I could not afford the checkups that were so vital to my health. My experience is common.

Cat, New Franklin

Family planner wrongly smeared

Toledo Blade, 8/15/15

It is offensive that “Christian” anti-abortion activists would try to destroy Planned Parenthood’s reputation with an outrageous and false smear campaign. Don’t approve of abortion? Don’t have one. Don’t approve of contraceptives? Don’t use them. Don’t approve of fetal tissue used for medical research? Too bad.
