Discussing the “Pastor Protection Act,” with Equality Ohio and ACLU Ohio

Find us on iTunes: http://bit.ly/naralpodcast

This week, Gabe was joined by Grant from Equality Ohio and Lisa from ACLU Ohio! These are two terrific organizations that NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio is proud to partner with in the fight to protect personal freedoms.

Ironically, they’re joining us this week to discuss a bill that claims to also protect personal freedom, but in fact opens the door to state-approve discrimination against the LGBT community.

The so-called “Pastor Protection Act” (House Bill 36) says that Ohio clergy members don’t have to perform same-sex weddings if they don’t want to. However, under current Ohio law, Ohio clergy members don’t have to perform same-sex weddings if they don’t want to.

Why write a bill that essentially repeats existing Ohio law? Great question, and our guests today help explore the answer.

Listen to the discussion and then participate in the ACLU Ohio action alert to contact your Ohio lawmakers.

WHO/O was one of many partner organizations at the Roe Together – Columbus Activist Bootcamp held last night. The event was a massive success, with 237 people in attendance. A similar crowd filled a hall in Cincinnati last week, and a sold out crowd will be in attendance in Cleveland tonight. Once all five events are complete, over 1,000 Ohioans will have joined us to learn about threats to reproductive health care and access to safe and legal abortion.

Week 1: Damage Report

This week, Gabe, Jaime, and Randi look at the first week of the… well… current presidential administration. We can’t quite bring ourselves to say it.

Across the globe, millions of women, men, and families marched across the globe in support of abortion rights and against the many policies could impact women during the current administration. In Ohio, marches were held in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Chillicothe, and Dayton.

We’re already seeing anti-choice policies moving forward, with state and federal versions of the six-week abortion ban in the works. Worse yet, the Global Gag Rule has returned, and it’s worse than before.

Join NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio and our coalition partners at an activist bootcamp around Ohio this month:

This week, Gabe was joined by Claressa and Michelle from Feminist Flag Corps! Find them on Twitter and Facebook. You can also read more about them on Columbus Underground.

Over the past year, they’ve worked to raise funds to pay for women’s abortion by creating a unique design for flags. Taking inspiration from the Gadsdsen Flag that many conservatives have co-opted, Claressa combined a snake and uterus to send a clear message: Don’t Tread On Me. Proceeds from sales of the flags go to Women Have Options — Ohio, one of Ohio’s most active abortion funds.

In addition to the flag project, they have been active outside Columbus abortion clinics working as escorts and monitoring protesters. They were in attendance at the Columbus March for Women last Saturday, and will be attending the national march in Washington DC this weekend.

You can catch up with NARAL and our partners at an event in Ohio this Winter.

What the Duck?

This week, Gabe and Jaime were joined by Amelia Hayes from Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio. She helped us recall the events of the 2016 Lame Duck legislative session.

In September, Ohio Right to Life indicated to the Cleveland Plain Dealer that they intended to try to pass Senate Bill 127, which bans abortion at 20 weeks. There were 20,976 abortions performed in Ohio in 2015, but only 2% of all abortions reported were at 20 weeks are later. Anecdotal evidence shows that most of these procedures are performed after women receive diagnoses of medical complications, either threatening their own health or their pregnancy. Bans on abortions after 20-weeks punish women who wanted to have healthy pregnancies. Because 20-week bans block abortion before a point of viability, they are unconstitutional according to guidelines established in Planned Parenthood v. Casey.

Read one woman’s story of an abortion at 22 weeks in the USA Today.

On December 6, after committee notices had been distributed with no abortion ban hearings scheduled, a surprise amendment was introduced in the Ohio Senate. The amendment was the language of the six-week abortion ban known as the “Heartbeat Bill.” The Senate and House both passed the bill on that day, sending it to John Kasich for signature or veto.

Video: Ohio Senate debate on the “Heartbeat Bill” amendment.

Two days later, the House passed the 20-week abortion ban, which Gov. Kasich signed into law.

Video: Ohio House debate on the 20-week abortion ban.

As he signed the 20-week abortion ban, he also used a special line-item veto power to remove the “Heartbeat Bill” amendment from its bill. In one week, John Kasich created a national media firestorm and attempted to make himself appear moderate.
