This week, Jaime, Vashitta, and Gabe review the last week of June. Between committee hearings on abortion restrictions and late-night budget talks, it’s amazing we’re still awake.
The Ohio Senate passed the Abortion Method Ban, Senate Bill 145. We received support on the Senate floor from from Senators Charleta Tavares, Sondra Williams, and Joe Schiavoni. In Committee, Senators Cecile Thomas and Sean O’Brien led in the defense of Ohio women. The 24-9 vote was along party lines.
NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Deputy Director Jaime Miracle said:
This ban forces women seeking an abortion to seek out less-safe procedures, but today we saw from state lawmakers that they just don’t care. The decision about whether and how to terminate a pregnancy should be up to a woman and her doctor. They don’t need political interference driven by inflammatory, biased rhetoric.
Medical experts like the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists oppose bills like these. They feel doctors will be forced by ill-advised, unscientifically-motivated policy to provide lesser care to patients. This bill is just another unconstitutional attack on access to abortion care, just like the other 18 restrictions that Governor Kasich signed during his tenure.
While we watched in the Senate, the Ohio House was discussing the future of Medicaid expansion. Representative Emilia Sykes delivered a scathing rebuke of legislators seeking to remove access to health care for 500,000 low-income Ohioans.

Help build a pro-choice Ohio. Every day, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio fights to protect access to the full range of reproductive health care options—including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and safe & legal abortion care. We educate the public about the real threat to women’s healthcare posed by anti-choice legislation and policies. We mobilize pro-choice Ohioans to take political action to defend reproductive rights. And we are the voice for Ohio’s abortion clinics, helping them navigate the increasingly hostile climate created by extremist groups. But we need your help. As a member organization, we rely on your financial support to fund our important legislative, educational, and grassroots activities.
