This week, Randi, Jaime, and Gabe discuss the All Access concert. On Sept. 10th, abortion rights supporters gathered in Cleveland for a night of music, comedy, and entertainment.

All Access featured performances from Grammy-nominated artist Sia, standup from Saturday Night Live cast member and Ghostbusters star Leslie Jones, hosted by with Comedy Central’s Jessica Williams.

NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio filed an exclusive pre-show video with three women who shared their abortion stories from the stage: Renee, Mallory, and MJ.

Before the event, New Voices Cleveland held a #TrustBlackWomen event with Nina Turner, Rep. Stephanie Howse, and others to lift up voices for Reproductive Justice.

During the event, our Patients to Advocates shared a new poem and spoke out as to why they support abortion rights.

In Ohio news, the new ballot initiative filing we discussed last week was rejected by the Ohio Attorney General’s office because it did not have the required 1,000 signatures. The AG’s office did not provide any opinion on the abortion ban proposal, only the number of valid signatures submitted. The campaign will continue to collect signatures to reach this initial goal to trigger an ballot board approval. Once they clear the first hurdle, then they will begin to collect the 305,000+ signatures needed to place the issue on a ballot, as early as November, 2017. The initiative language states the purpose: “To prohibit abortion of all unborn human beings, without exception, and classifying it as aggravated murder in the State of Ohio.”

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine did make a decision in Toledo, choosing to appeal the Capital Care case to the Ohio Supreme Court. Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Myron Duhart and the 6th District court have each issued decisions granting Toledo’s last abortion provider the right to keep their doors open. Capital Care Network is fighting against Ohio’s medically unnecessary transfer agreement laws. Their case is supported by new legal precedent from the 2016 US Supreme Court decision, Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt. Despite the fresh interpretation of abortion rights from the high court, DeWine is continuing to spend taxpayer resources on appealing the case.

NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland said

Mike DeWine is putting politics before women health, just as he always does. Toledo’s last abortion clinic is a critical resource for women across Northwest, Ohio. His ongoing campaign to close Capital Care is a waste of taxpayer dollars and an effort to support an unconstitutional restriction on doctors. What is the point of having an attorney general in Ohio if he won’t recognize the law?

Every day, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio fights to protect access to the full range of reproductive health care options—including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and safe & legal abortion care. We educate the public about the real threat to women’s healthcare posed by anti-choice legislation and policies. We mobilize pro-choice Ohioans to take political action to defend reproductive rights. And we are the voice for Ohio’s abortion clinics, helping them navigate the increasingly hostile climate created by extremist groups. But we need your help.
