This week, Randi, Jaime, and Gabe discuss recent murders of Black men Alton Sterling and Phillando Castille and five Dallas Police Officers Lorne Ahrens, Michael Krol, Michael Smith, Brent Thompson, and Patrick Zamarripa. We firmly support the #BlackLivesMatter movement, but also recognize the contributions of law enforcement in keeping abortion clinics safe. The Columbus Police Department was represented twice during the hearings on the new Columbus clinic protection ordinance, once represented by a Black female officer and later by a Black male officer. Our discussion focuses on the need to balance calls police reform and respect the value of responsible police officers. Our That’s What She Said of the week goes to Warrensville Heights, Ohio Police Officer Nakia Jones’s video criticizing racist police.

In the Title IX Sports Report, we applaud Serena Williams for having the bet year ever. After appearing in Beyoncé’s Lemonade video, she won Wimbledon and tied the all-time women’s tennis grand slam record. She has also set grand slam records unmatched by any player, male or female. She is clearly one of the greatest female athletes of all time. We also recognize her confident voice in calling for social justice.

NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio welcomes comedian and The Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead and her Lady Parts Justice comedy team to Cleveland for an epic take-down of the Republican National Convention. Joining them are comedian Alonzo Bodden, who you know from NPR’s Wait Wait, Don’t Tell Me, and Emmy Award-winning comedian Frank Conniff, who stars on Mystery Science Theatre 3000. The event will be a raucous, interactive RNC watch party timed to coincide with Donald Trump’s Thursday night acceptance speech.

Help build a pro-choice Ohio. Every day, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio fights to protect access to the full range of reproductive health care options—including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and safe & legal abortion care. We educate the public about the real threat to women’s healthcare posed by anti-choice legislation and policies. We mobilize pro-choice Ohioans to take political action to defend reproductive rights. And we are the voice for Ohio’s abortion clinics, helping them navigate the increasingly hostile climate created by extremist groups. But we need your help. As a member organization, we rely on your financial support to fund our important legislative, educational, and grassroots activities.
