NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Statement on Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt Decision
Ruling will make it easier to challenge Ohio’s medically unnecessary restrictions
Columbus, Ohio — NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland issued the following statement in response to today’s Supreme Court decision in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt: “Today’s ruling is great news for Ohioans who value access to safe and legal abortion care. The Supreme Court saw what we already knew — that medically unnecessary restrictions on abortion providers are never about protecting women. These laws are designed to limit access to abortion and undermine a woman’s dignity and ability to determine her own future. A woman has a constitutional right to make her own decisions about her health, family, and future, no matter her zip code.
“The Supreme Court said that states have gone too far and that Targeted Regulations of Abortion Providers (TRAP Laws) can be an undue burden. Nearly half of Ohio’s abortion clinics have closed and women have been forced to delay access to the health care they need. The Supreme Court sent a loud and clear message that politicians cannot use deceptive means to shut down abortion clinics. The legislators who created these undue burdens in Ohio should act immediately to remove them with House Bill 370, which would abolish Ohio’s medically unnecessary transfer agreement requirements. Four cases are currently pending in courts across Ohio. How much more taxpayer money are anti-choice politicians in Ohio willing to spend on their political crusade against abortion providers?”
