This week, Randi, Gabe and Jaime discuss the comments from John Kasich on sexual assault. At an event in New York, a first-year student at St. Lawrence University asked him:
“My question is, being that I’m a young female college student, what are you going to do in office as president to help me feel safer and more secure regarding sexual violence, harassment and rape?”
His answer discussed prosecutions, rape kits, and ended:
“I’ll also give you one bit of advice: Don’t go to parties where there’s a lot of alcohol. OK? Don’t do that.”
In a statement following Kasich’s remarks, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland said:
“John Kasich has shown little concern for rape survivors in Ohio. Too often, his administration has exploited a political situation before protecting services for victims of sexual violence.
“Take the most recent bill to defunding Planned Parenthood, for example. John Kasich blocked vital prevention funding from Violence Against Women Act. These programs focus much of their attention on teaching boys, how to combat rape culture, and stop men from becoming rapists.
“John Kasich blocked sexual assault programs and education because John Kasich doesn’t understand why they are necessary. Telling women that they need to avoid parties with alcohol shows just how out of touch he is with the realities young women face on campus every day.”
The Columbus Dispatch editorial board earns our Walk of Shame for the week. Their editorial backed Kasich’s comments, also ignoring the need for education for boys and Kasich’s record of blocking rape prevention funds from groups like Planned Parenthood.
Hillary Clinton won the New York primary, giving her an even more solid path to the nomination. Donald Trump also gained a wider margin of delegates, making his nomination by Republicans a closer certainty.

Help build a pro-choice Ohio. Every day, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio fights to protect access to the full range of reproductive health care options—including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and safe & legal abortion care. We educate the public about the real threat to women’s healthcare posed by anti-choice legislation and policies. We mobilize pro-choice Ohioans to take political action to defend reproductive rights.
