Ohio Abortions Performed by Michigan Doctors

The Ohio Department of Health released the 2014 Ohio Abortion Report, which showed an 8.7% decline in procedures. Meanwhile, abortions performed in Michigan increased 6%, with a doubling in the rate of women who crossed state borders to find a doctor.

NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland:

Ohio women are being forced to leave the state to access abortion care. The number of abortion providers has been cut in half during the Kasich administration, but the rate of abortions sought by Ohio women has not gone down as dramatically.

Ohio Right to Life brags about a decline in abortions, but what their policies have created are increases for women. Cost is increasing. Travel time is increasing. Risk of losing a job due to absence is increasing.

The Ohio Abortion Report only shows the number of safe and legal procedures obtained in Ohio. Poor women are going to seek out unreported, illegal alternatives; or they are going to have to give birth to a child they are unprepared to raise. Ohio women shouldn’t be dragged backwards by John Kasich’s agenda.

Help build a pro-choice Ohio. Every day, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio fights to protect access to the full range of reproductive health care options—including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and safe & legal abortion care. We educate the public about the real threat to women’s healthcare posed by anti-choice legislation and policies. We mobilize pro-choice Ohioans to take political action to defend reproductive rights. And we are the voice for Ohio’s abortion clinics, helping them navigate the increasingly hostile climate created by extremist groups. But we need your help. As a member organization, we rely on your financial support to fund our important legislative, educational, and grassroots activities.
