Dear John, Part 2.

The Kasich campaign for (vice?) president has officially begun, and reporters across the country are asking: “Wait, what was his point?”

Welcome to life with John. Speeches are unscripted, rambling, and without a clear point. This Washington Post headline says it all:

John Kasich makes a strong case for the teleprompter in his presidential announcement speech

So does this, from US News & World Report:

John Kasich Blew His 2016 Announcement

Why is this? One theory: John Kasich is a career politician. The only sincere work he’s ever done was his stint on Wall Street between Congress and being governor. As a politician, he benefits by approving legislation written by his friends. Ohio women are paying a huge price because one of his favorite group of friends is Ohio Right to Life. They dream up a scheme, and he’ll rubber stamp it.

His speech didn’t mention views on abortion, yet he has signed more anti-choice laws than any other governor in Ohio’s history. This isn’t why he runs for office. He runs for office to approve his friends’ bills.

This lack of any platform is Reason #1 why he shouldn’t be president. John Kasich’s unwillingness to say “No” to anti-choice extremists makes him a terrible leader. He would never oppose a federal 20-week abortion ban, because he’ll trade women’s rights for favors from John Boehner’s caucus. He would appoint whichever Supreme Court nominee Mitch McConnell tells him to. He would appoint Right to Life extremists to the US Department of Health and Human Services, just like he’s done with the Ohio Department of Health and the State Medical Board.

This isn’t governance. It is cowardice.

Dear John

NARAL_DearJohnBlog_20150720

It’s time to break up with John Kasich.

Send him a “Dear John” letter. Tell him why you do not support his bid for president.

As governor, he has rubber stamped abortion bans, cut funding to Planned Parenthood, and allowed Ohio Right to Life to use the Ohio Department of Health as an attack vehicle against abortion providers across the state.

During his administration, half of Ohio’s abortion clinics have closed.

We’ve seen a terrible cycle since he was first elected:

  • First, Statehouse politicians try to impress anti-abortion lobbyists by pushing terrible bills.
  • Then, Governor Kasich approves anything and everything they place on his desk.
  • Finally, the lobbyists raise money on this and hand it to the next class of anti-choice politicians.

This isn’t governance, it’s cowardice.

The politicians, lobbyists, and Kasich see this as a game, and they don’t care that Ohio women are losing access to abortion.

Worse yet, the game is changing. When a heavily edited video was released with false accusations about Planned Parenthood, John Kasich was one of the first to use it as a chance to score some headlines. We’ve already seen Kasich fail to stop politicians who would harm women — now he’s playing along with the worst kind of extremists.

It’s time to end the game. He can’t take it to the next level.

Send him your Dear John letter today.
